Add all manner of symbols to your Twitter messages using TwitterKeys.

When a symbol unmoors itself from what it symbolizes, it loses meaning. It becomes ineffective
- Arundhati Roy quotes (Indian Author b.1961)

With Twitter is growing like crazy: up 422% in 12 months and the fact that Facebook isn’t a social network, it’s probably a safe bet that you want to use Twitter as effectively as possible. Did you know that Twitter accepts more than just basic text?

The service is UTF8 compatible which means that instead of tweeting “I love you” you could just as well use “I ? you”. Adding symbols to Tweets used to involve keystroke combinations but using TwitterKeys all you have to do is use cut and paste (Control + C) then (Control + V) into your Tweet.

TwitterKeys is a tool developed at The Next Web Blog which provides you with a window with the symbols you can use in Twitter.

Here’s some of the buzz surrounding this:

@tony_fagerlund ? TwitterKeys makes it easier to use ASCII symbols.

@adamlevenson TwitterKeys is cool but now everyone will have funky chars in their tweets. How annoying. What do they look like via sms?

@ladyducatnip w cute. Now we can tweet with symbols. ? Now if I could only use them on twhirl!

@biz Thanks for TwitterKeys - I made a Fluid app so I can just have it sitting next to my Twitter client :)

@nancyscola From now on, I will respond to all tweets with either ?or ?.

Of course this service won’t be of use to everyone:
