What Thatcher Did
Follow me on Twitter
Thirty years after she became Britain’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher remains a political figure of almost mythical proportions. But what of her legacy?
This is what David Cameron had to say in a letter to Britain’s 49th prime minister.
It is now 30 years since the great day when you first walked into Downing Street. And as I in turn try to get rid of an exhausted Labour government, I find it awe-inspiring to think of how you gave the British people back their pride and self-belief.
Let’s look at Thatchers gifts to the British people more closely:
- Thatcher’s economic model saved us? She and her apostles built the shadow banking system, free of government control, that has busted the economy.
- Thatcher allowed ordinary people to get ahead? Social mobility, as a huge study by the LSE has shown, collapsed in the 1980s and 90s.
- Thatcher expanded freedom? It was she who called Nelson Mandela a terrorist and criminalised homosexuality in schools.
Are these achievements to be proud of?
I hope not.
